The Spring Sequel

Hi all NaPhoBoMo’ers,

A few months have passed since the first NaPhoBoMo event in November ‘09, and I know I’m getting a little antsy for a new project. One idea I’ve been batting around is to do a Spring Sequel for NaPhoBoMo. Given that May is Photography Month, that seems like perfect timing.

So, the original rules are still valid. You have one month - May - to take all the photos, and assemble a photobook of at least 50 photos. It’s up to you to choose the theme, and I’ll post links to the finished books here.

Also, if there’s interest, I found out that there’s another similar group: http://www.sofobomo.org. This year, they’re doing a photobook in june/july.

Food For Thought

Well today is December 3rd. I know, the book was suppose to be completed all within November. But since I started on November 3rd, I guess I still completed it within a month. :) At least that is how I am justifying it this year.

The project was a little more difficult than I had anticipated, but fun non the less. I hope you all enjoy.

At 9:45 on November 30th, I began to see the excellent completed works from other participants in this wonderful NaPhoBoMo project, and I wanted to fit in. So I went out and began taking pictures. And by “out” I mean out of my computer chair and into the wilds of my one-bedroom apartment. I pressed the macro button on my camera, but it didn’t prevent most of my closeups from being blurry.

Our time is running out…

Choosing my project for the National Photo Book Month. I originally chose to do the theme of long exposure photography. Being that I could only take photos in certain lighting conditions, the idea became very difficult to finish, and I ran out of time. This morning, November 30th, I was out of time, and could not finish the project. Disappointed in myself for procrastinating, I gave up. I was kicking myself for not choosing a theme that was easier to execute. Then it came to me. I am a big procrastinator, and time always seems to be against me, so I thought, what if I did the entire project in one day, documenting the time in between shots. Using time as my theme now, I picked up an alarm clock and went out shooting. The time that is displayed on the clock, it the actual time of the photo. All Photos were taken on Monday, November 30th, 2009 I present to you my entry into NaPhoBoMoDay. Download my book in PDF format here.

Adventures of Kyle by Kevin Van Lierop

At the beginning of the month I set out on a photographic journey with a dozen or so mostly local photographer. The challenge was raised by Andy Berdan to create a photo book over a period of a month. Taking elements from NaWriNoMo and tweaking rules to our liking, we all started to see what we could produce. This initiative is called NaPhoBoMo.

From the very beginning I decided to start up a website, Adventures of Kyle, to track my progression through the month. Each day a new photo has been added and will continue to do so until the end of 2009.

Now that November is almost over I have finished taking my shots for the month and have compiled a book in memory of what I completed this month.

The book is available for download FOR FREE by clicking HERE and it has an associated Creative Commons License to it.

East of Adelaide - by Dana Dobbie

Although she started out with one project theme in mind and ended up with something completely opposite, Dana Dobbie finished her NaPhoBoMo project with time to spare.

East of Adeliade
EOA is a slang term that has been adopted by the city of London, Ontario “where one can witness three stabings, six drive by shootings, two drug deals, and buy a prostitute, all in one afternoon.” aka where I currently reside. All the photos were taken along Dundas street east of Adeliade. Its really not as scary as some people think.

Pick A Word

I’d like to present my NaPhoBoMo photobook entitled “Pick A Word”. I made the pdf version in powerpoint (I’m pretty limited in terms of computer gadgets) but I’m pleased with the result. I also did a layout for a hard copy book and may be creating a print version for myself. Enjoy!

NaPhoBoMo #1 Complete!

As I’m going to be quite busy this last November weekend, I’ve gone ahead and finished my photobook. Layout and some final shots were done last night. I used Aperture for the layout (after being a little unsatisfied with the options in iPhoto). I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. I might edit out a few pictures and/or make some replacements, before I create an actual physical copy, but I’m quite satisfied with it as a PDF.

Getting Started

Finally I was able to get started with my NaPhoBoMo series. First thing that I found out is that I need to purchase a new Tripod, as mine is tending to drift with any long exposure times.

I’m going to be trying to examine the nature of words in our enviroment based on this simple equations:

If picture(x)=1000 words, where x=anything, and words= a grouping of letters meant to convey some meaning, to insipre, to defy, to manipulate, to identify, to warn or to encourage etc.

Then, picture(words)=?

I’m not entirely sure how this examination is going to play out or if I can even find enough compelling examples in my environment by the required date, but that is the goal. So over the next two weeks I’m going to try and make photographs based on this idea and see if I can work something out.

A new paintbrush

I’ve managed to get through a photoshoot and edit cycle for my NaPhoBoMo book. As mentioned before, my theme is Light Painting. Here’s one of the results (more posted in the flickr set):

I decided to try out the Lightroom 3 beta for this project as well. We’ll see how it goes — the flickr publishing is certainly nice (just a word of warning - don’t delete anything on the flickr website itself, you have to use the LR3 interface).

I figured since it is movember, it just seems appropriate to do a theme revolving around Mustaches. I’m super excited for this project, and even more excited to see what others come up with.

I will most likely update some of my progress via twitter as well my flickr account.

NaPhoBoMo Updates

Beyond all my expectations, National Photo Book Month has hit 12 confirmed participants since I started the whole idea on October 23rd. Good luck to everyone on accomplishing the challenge.

I do have a couple of things to discuss, however. One is the thought that tumblr might not be the right system for the site. I will continue to use it for this year’s challenge, but I would like the web developers and designers in the group to think about what might be a good replacement.

Also, once the photobooks are completed, I would like to make a compilation of all our photobooks - each participant gets a chapter (ordered roughly by signup time to NaPhoBoMo, perhaps?). I’ll consider this an opt-in extra to NaPhoBoMo, so nobody will be required to contribute to the compilation.

Any thoughts?

I have decided to create my book on the meals that I eat. I will be taking pictures of the different foods I eat throughout the month. I will only be using a 105mm MACRO lens, hopefully giving me some well needed practice with this lens.

Long Exposure Topic

I’ve chosen my topic as Long Exposure photography. Fairly easy to do, and can be done anywhere and anytime with the only thing really needed is a tripod. All shots will be done with a minimum exposure time of 10 seconds.

Adventures of Kyle

Adventures of Kyle is a month long photo project that documents the explorations of Kyle Broflovski, one of the main South Park characters.

Kyle will be traveling around for the month of November with Kevin Van Lierop and as he (Kyle) encounters the world Kevin will be documenting it.

From 3 day binge drinking, to trying to make some money by becoming a local transit operator, Kyle will be getting into as much trouble as un-humanly possible for a 99¢ stuffed figurine.

Light Painting Topic

I had a few ideas, and had a hard time picking one. But, since this is the inaugural run of NaPhoBoMo, I think I’ll pick a topic that’s a bit easier on scheduling requirements.

So, as the title suggests, I’ve decided to do my book on Light Painting. I’ll have to dig out the christmas tree lights, flashlights and LEDs, and see what I can come up with.
